Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe
Mountains National Parks, October 2007
These two National Parks are about a four-hour drive from Las Cruces.  We've visited there several times,
most recently with our son James and his wife Daniella.  The cave pictures were taken with a tripod and the
light available in the cave.  From about April into October migratory bats make their home in the Carlsbad
Caverns.  Each night, before sunset, they leave to forage on insects near the Pecos River.  The night we
saw them leave, the ranger estimated their number at about 500,000.  Quite a sight, to say the least.  It
took about an hour for all of them to leave.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in north Texas, about 25 miles south of the Carlsbad
Caverns.  The park contains the highest peaks in Texas, several over 8000 feet.  Some of the Guadalupe
range is made up of an ancient reef (about 250 million years old) which was formed when this area was on
the shoreline of an ancient sea.  It's a very beautiful area which is in stark contrast to the desolate
countryside of most of this part of Texas.
